New York City and Manhattan, NY
When it comes to your skin, the sooner you start taking care of it, the better. But, if you have neglected it thus far, it still may not be too late to turn things around. Taking good care of your skin helps you maintain that youthful glow, and prevent premature signs of aging. Manhattan area board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Debra Wattenberg, and Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz want to share with you five ways to get youthful-looking skin.
- Stay hydrated
Our skin is an organ, and it requires water to stay healthy and hydrated. Skimping on your daily water intake could lead to dry skin that is more likely to wrinkle and age faster. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, although your body may require more, depending on your diet and activity level. Drinking enough water will help decrease those under eye circles, and it helps flush out toxins from your body, which can help minimize any acne breakouts.
- Use facial cleansing soap
It is best to stick to using soap or cleanser that is designed for your face. Avoid cleansing your face with the same soap that you use to wash your body, or your hair (yes, people have been known to do this!). Cleansers that aren’t designed for the face are too harsh and will strip the skin of its natural oils that protect it. Also, it is best to remove your makeup first.
- Watch your diet
Salt and sugar, albeit make food so much tastier, aren’t good for the skin. Too much salt dehydrates the skin and can cause your face to look puffy, specifically around the eyes. Common snacks that tend to have too much sodium are chips, popcorn, and pretzels.
Sugar isn’t so good either. It messes with your blood sugar levels, which breaks down healthy collagen, a necessary component of youthful-looking skin. It is best to limit your intake of sweets as much as possible or avoid them altogether.
- Use a mask once a week
Masks are great for removing dead skin cells and cleaning out your pores. They are most effective if used once a week. However, be sure that you choose the best one for your skin type. There are different types designed for dry, oily, acne-prone, or aging skin. So, be sure to check the labels and settle for one that is best suited for your skincare needs. Also, don’t assume that the more, the better, when it comes to applying a mask. Stick to just once a week, unless otherwise advised by your dermatologist because too frequent use could dry out your skin.
- See a dermatologist
Seeing a dermatologist can help you achieve that youthful skin that you desire. While a good at-home skin care regimen is necessary, sometimes the help of a dermatologist can make all the difference in how your skin looks.
