Laser Hair Removal
Unwanted hair can be a major issue affecting your appearance and, with it, your self-esteem. For a safe, non-invasive and long-term solution to this problem, Drs. Debra Wattenberg, Ilyse Lefkowicz and Jamie Manning, your Manhattan board-certified dermatologists at NY Skin RX, can perform a laser hair removal procedure.
How does a laser hair removal work?
Our laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, which is located below the surface of the skin. The energy of the laser is transformed into heat energy that destroys the hair follicle without affecting the surrounding skin in any way. While you are undergoing treatment, having the laser exposed to your skin feels like the snapping of a rubber band or a series of warm pinpricks. After the procedure, you may experience temporary swelling and redness around the hair follicle. It is important to avoid any sun exposure and tanning cream prior to and following laser hair removal in our New York City office.
You will need to have repeat treatments to ensure thorough hair removal, as your hair naturally cycles as it grows. Each patient is unique, but it usually takes between five and seven treatments per site to ensure complete hair removal. You should notice a difference in the prevalence of hair after each session, with a noticeable decrease in the number of hairs. New hair that regrows will tend to be lighter in color and have a finer texture.
What areas of the body can be treated by laser hair removal?
- Facial areas, such as the upper lip, chin, and sideburns
- Bikini area
- Upper and/or lower legs
- Arms
- Chest
- Back
- Underarms
Whatever area of the body you want to have treated, the end result of a laser hair removal procedure leaves skin that is smooth, stubble-free, and will not be irritated by ingrown hairs.
How should I prepare before a laser hair removal appointment?
The doctors at NY Skin RX recommend any person who is interested in a laser hair removal procedure avoid tanning for at least 4 weeks or using sunless tanners for at least 2 weeks prior to their appointment. Also refrain from plucking, waxing, or electrolysis prior to a laser hair removal. In addition, please let us know if you are taking any medication that makes you sensitive to light. Finally, please shave the area being treated one to two days prior to your laser hair removal treatment.
