Neurotoxins
Do you have frown lines, crow’s feet around your eyes, or other unwanted facial wrinkles? While these are all normal signs of aging, some people are concerned and prefer not to have them. You can prevent or reverse these signs of aging by receiving Botulinum Toxin A, an injectable treatment from Drs. Wattenberg, Lefkowicz, and Manning, board-certified dermatologists in Manhattan at NY Skin RX.
What are Neurotoxins?
Don’t let the word “toxin” scare you. These treatments have been used safely for decades by cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists all over the world, The active ingredient is a purified protein which can be administered by one of our New York City dermatologists. Dr. Wattenberg, Dr. Lefkowicz, or Dr. Manning can complete the treatment in minutes, and the effects last as long as three to six months.
In addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles, Botulinum Toxin A can also be used to manage excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) by weakening the activity of the sweat glands. An injectable toxin can curtail excessive sweating for up to 6-9 months before a repeat treatment would be necessary.
What types of Neurotoxins are available at NY Skin RX?
Botox – Used in both medical science and cosmetic procedures for many years. Botox injections usually last between three and six months. Botox weakens the facial muscles, preventing them from the contractions that cause wrinkles, resulting in a completely natural look. Botox is used most often to correct the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Popular locations for Botox injections include the forehead, between the eyebrows, “crow’s feet” around the eyes, the chin and the neck.
Dysport- Using the same purified protein neurotoxin that serves as the active ingredient in Botox, Dysport yields similar results but can have a quicker onset of action. Ideal for targeting frown lines located between the eyebrows, crows feet and forehead. Dysport targets only the specific muscle being treated while the surrounding musculature maintains normal function.
Jeuveau- The newest toxin, #NEWTOX, to hit the market. Studies suggest that Jeuveau acts similarly to Botox with slightly longer lasting results.
What areas can be treated by Neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins can be used to correct wrinkles of the face and neck and eliminate excessive sweat production under the arms.
Neurotoxins can be used to treat:
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Downturned mouth
- Glabellar lines, frown lines, “11” lines
- Lip lines
- Gummy smile
- Masseter
- Dimpled chin
- Pronounced muscles in the neck (Platysmal bands)
- Underarms (excessive sweating)
What can I expect after my procedure?
Each injection administered by one of our board-certified dermatologists delivers a very small amount of medication into a specific facial muscle. The protein binds with the nerve endings in the muscle, causing it to relax and smooth the corresponding wrinkles on the skin’s surface, giving you a natural look. Most toxins take 3-5 days to begin working. A follow up treatment may be needed 10-14 days post procedure to maximize your results.
After receiving a Botulinum Toxin A injection, occasionally patients may notice bruising at the injection site, but this can usually be concealed easily with makeup and will not last long. You may also experience a headache after receiving injections in the forehead area—especially if it is the first time you are receiving a treatment of this kind. However, you should be able to return to work and resume most activities immediately following the procedure. We recommend avoiding aspirin and anti inflammatory medication for 7-10 days prior to the treatment.
Am I a candidate for Neurotoxins?
You may want to consider neurotoxin injections if you have unwanted facial wrinkles. Drs. Wattenberg, Lefkowicz and Manning may decide that you are a good candidate for Botox, Dysport or Jeuveau if you have moderate to severe facial wrinkles, the wrinkles are located in areas that toxins can treat, such as around or between the eyes, on the forehead, or around the neck, your general health is good, and you have realistic expectations for improvement.
