New York City and Manhattan, NY
No matter your skin type, the hallmark of young-looking skin is skin that is vibrant and blemish-free. Unfortunately, exposure to UVA and UVB rays from the sun causes sun spots and age spots that can make a person look older. Photoaging is an umbrella term for photo-damage, hyper- or hypopigmentation, sagging skin, wrinkles, and even skin cancer caused by sun exposure. Board-certified dermatologists on the Upper East Side, Drs. Debra Wattenberg and Ilyse Lefkowicz, have some tips to share with you on how to avoid skin damage this summer.
Sunscreen
We can’t stress enough the importance of wearing sunscreen daily. Most people tend only to think of wearing sunscreen during the summer when outside for an extended period or when at the beach or poolside. However, even if your only sun exposure is from riding in your car or walking from the parking lot to inside, wear sunscreen! Choose one with zinc-oxide and an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every few hours, or after you sweat or go swimming. Don’t forget those lips! Apply a sun protectant balm of at least an SPF 30-50.
Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds were so last century! While tanning beds become increasingly popular during the 1980s and ’90s, they aren’t as popular as they once were, leaving people looking for safer ways to get that sun-kissed look. But, if you still get a tan from UV lamps, stop! Tanning beds are notorious for accelerating skin aging at an alarming rate. Not to mention they substantially increase your risk of skin cancer. Try a spray tan or other self-tanning product to get the darker skin you crave during summer.
Cover up
We know summertime gets hot out, but it’s essential to keep your body protected from the sun as much as possible. Even if you wear sunscreen, wear a hat if you’re going to be outside for long periods of time. It helps protect your scalp and face from the sun’s harmful rays. If a hat isn’t conducive to your outfit, twirl a parasol (another word for a fancy umbrella) to shade your body. It made Mary Poppins look classy, so why not?
Think SPF clothing for additional protection. Clothing made with SPF is great for long days on the golf course, at the beach, or while enjoying an outdoor festival. Choose a fabric that breathes well and is moisture wicking for a cooler experience. These protective layers paired with sunscreen is sure to help prevent sun spots and skin damage.
