Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic, skin condition which appears as red skin covered by silvery-white scale frequently on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp. People often experience flares and remissions throughout their life. Psoriasis is believed to be related to faulty signals sent by the body’s immune system, which accelerate the growth cycle in skin cells. This results in the cells piling up on the surface when the body can’t shed them fast enough. Psoriasis can be triggered by stress, infections and certain medicines. There also is a genetic component associated with psoriasis. While psoriasis cannot be cured, we offer a number of treatments that help to control psoriasis including topical corticosteroids, Vitamin D analogs and biologic therapies (topical immunomodulators such as tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream).
